University Art Gallery, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - An Ernst Haeckel exhibition from 2005 pairing prints from Kunstformen der Natur with modern sculptures. He was a biologist who discover many different species, some relatively minuscule species - generally varieties of flora and fauna. Kunstformen der Natur (known in English as Art Forms in Nature) is a book of lithographic and halftone prints by German biologist Ernst Haeckel. There is a long queue of people who have this on reserve at the library, and the copy I have is almost due, so I can’t keep perusing it.

Some people have bought it to give them inspiration in their drawings, which I'm sure it does, I bought it to see if it would give me inspiration to do some unusual woodworking pieces, it does that too.

The center and bottom-center images are Desmonema annasethe; the tentacles reminded Haeckel of his late wife's long flowing hair. I got the Prestel edition, and it has a nice mix of full-color and black and white plates (illustrations). The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel’s prints, continue to influence artists and designers to this day.

Although it contains a statement of most of the views with which Haeckel’s name is associated, it did not attract much attention on its first appearance, and accordingly, its author rewrote much of its substance in a more popular style and published it a year or two later as the Natural History of Creation ( Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte), which was far more successful (. I had no idea so many images I’ve seen in other books or as posters or even in my own curriculum came from Haeckel! In 1861, at the instance of Carl Gegenbaur, he became Privatdozent at Jena; in the succeeding year he was chosen extraordinary professor of comparative anatomy and director of the Zoological Institute in the same university; in 1865 he was appointed to a chair of zoology which was specially established for his benefit.
