These are important as they will increase the amount of tech, money and build points you will generate every round. A game of Eclipse places you in control of a vast interstellar civilization, competing for success with its rivals. Generally, when games reach this point of saturation for me, it’s time to toss in an expansion or two to mix things up again and increase variety. Replayability is very high not only because of the random tile draws but not ever tile will be used that is included with the game. Different civilizations gain bonuses for specific actions, and that is where the asymmetrical faction design really shows.

Though it should be mentioned there are ways to eliminate your debt by relinquishing systems you control, it is nevertheless very easy to bite off more than you can chew (yes, it has happened to us on more than one occasion! They have provided plenty of impetus to spend time upgrading our ships, and have also been the source of amazing triumphs when they’re eventually destroyed. The Postal service will also send you a notification slip when your parcel is ready for pick-up, but years of experience makes us recommend you not to solely rely on this. At the end of the round, any sectors that have at least two opposing factions (including NPCs – more on those later) engage in combat.

Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! The cardboard tokens are thick and sturdy and the only thing that seems “lesser” than the rest are the player sheets themselves.

It’s a game that’s easier to get to the table but still delivers the satisfying intergalactic civilization-building and conflict that I crave. Finally, the round ends with an upkeep phase in which players pay or gain the difference between the money their planets generate and the expense they uncovered on their influence track – possibly withdrawing from some sectors if they’ve overextended – before gaining technology and materials according to the planets they control. After that it jumps up to Orange with 2 hits, Blue with 3 hits and finally Red with four hits per die.

Love the exploring, the ship blueprint plans and how you can try completely different ship parts and strategies. For starters I’ve never gone under a play time of 3 hours which may be a bit long for those who like their games quick and simple.

If you’re concentrating on tech and exploration and suddenly you find a monster fleet hoving into view off your capital it can be pretty dispiriting, likewise with the “winner takes all” aspect to the space battles. Not only do they use colors to differentiate them by power but they make it easier to see if you’ve hit or missed by removing the “1” in favor of a blank side and removing the “6” in favor of an automatic hit. Every component is designed to have its own little niche inside of the game box, and there is virtually no spilling over of components when inside. The first action is “Explore” and this allows you to draw a random territory tile from one of the stacks depending on placement.
