Kent Hughes’s inspiring and best-selling book Disciplines of a Godly Man—now updated with fresh references and suggested resources—is filled with godly advice aimed at helping men grow in the disciplines of prayer, integrity, marriage, leadership, worship, purity, and more. This book was not only encouraging but also convicting, providing insight on how we tend to approach different situations, people, and God’s word. He earned his BA from Whittier College (history), an MDiv from Talbot Seminary and a DMin from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Kent Hughes’s inspiring and bestselling book Disciplines of a Godly Man—now updated with fresh references and suggested resources—is filled with godly advice aimed at helping men grow in the disciplines of prayer, integrity, marriage, leadership, worship, purity, and more.

There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’―that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written. He constantly references scripture throughout the book, to provide examples of men in the Bible living out the disciplines.

He points out the statistics of the amount of TV people watch on a daily basis as compared to the relatively small amount spent reading. If there is a spark of spiritual desire in your soul, this book will surely kindle it into a blazing passion for godly discipline. boxing and sweating like a champion to get victory over sin' is the most refreshing thing I could have set my eyes on. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.Kent Hughes' Disciplines of a Godly Man a positive influence on thousands of adults, this adaptation by Kent, his son Carey, and veteran youth leader Jonathan Carswell outlines the disciplines necessary to help a young man align every facet of his life with the fundamental truths of the Bible. Some chapters are a bit repetitive and some of the examples are outdated, but overall this was a solid book and I would recommend to anyone.

Kent Hughes skillfully weaves together the teachings of Scripture with real-life examples as he powerfully teaches us what true Christian manhood looks like in the ordinary details of our lives. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The events following his repentance: his baby died, his daughter Tamar was raped by her half-brother Ammon, Ammon was murdered by Tamar's full brother Absalom, and Absalom (loathing his father for his moral turpitude) eventually came to lead a rebellion under the tutelage of Bathsheba's resentful grandfather, Ahithophel. When you have a book that has been revised and updated several times since it was first printed in 1991, you know you have something rather special. For that reason, I’m delighted to see it just so slightly refreshed as it’s prepared to challenge a whole new generation of men with its biblical principles and timeless wisdom. Using engaging illustrations, scriptural wisdom, practical suggestions and study questions, Kent Hughes offers a frank biblical discussion on major areas of Christian manhood: family, godliness, leadership, ministry and more.

The typical disciplines you see (not a negative, they are always written about because they clearly Biblical and obviously important) written about are handled well, but the strength of this books comes from some of the other chapters that tackles things you don't always see, such as friendship and work. But through a vast majority of the writing it comes across as though he is making a long spiritual to-do list that causes more burden than freedom, which is what the disciplines are really for. Went through this book and a few other books with some guys at our church over the last 6 months and this was definitely a favorite in the group.R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and former professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. Incredible resource, I highly recommend this to every Christian male, and even Christian females to know what to look for in a guy! That being said, if you have a father, a son, a husband, or really just any man, this book is a must read on the disciplines that God expects of you.
