Between them, they have three carryalls filled with paperwork, letters, photographs, address books, and a diary. somewhere under all the density and excessive descriptions of everything, but it was just too much work to get to it under and around all the padding.

Paul Conway, film historian and fervid silent movie aficionado, is on the trail of a tantalizing rumour: that a single copy of The Devil’s Playground—a Holy Grail for film buffs that was supposedly cursed and lost to time—may still exist. Ultimately, I enjoyed the Hollywood murder mystery, but found the occult and supernatural aspects to be lacking. Mary discovers after she has covered up the suicide, that Norma was murdered, and her boss, Harry Carbine, who has bet the entire house on the success of the horror movie, asks her to investigate, despite her inexperience.

Russell, the author of the brilliant The Devil Aspect, is a steady guide, ferrying readers between Hollywood’s promises and its terrible reality. As Mary Rourke charges headlong through the egos, distractions, and traps that threaten to take her down with the doomed production, she discovers a truth far more sinister than she—or we—would imagine. The narrator, soon established as Elliot Chase, then zooms out to address the reader directly, introducing the players—most importantly movie star Lana Farrar. It was thought to be the greatest horror film ever but all prints were destroyed by fire before it could be released, except one. As he comes nearer, he gradually makes sense of it: a huge old house, tall and stark, with a jumble of mock-Victorian gables and mansard roofs stabbing the sterile pale-blue shield of sky.

Well-drawn characters introduce the criminal underworld to the occult kind in a breathless and compelling plot.I felt transported, immersed in a setting so vibrant, and larger than life that I became completely engrossed and engaged in the story. It takes Mary a little time to find her feet, acquiring help from LAPD's Jake Kendrick, but what becomes transparently clear quickly is that this is a dangerous inquiry that could get her killed. As Mary Rourke charges headlong through the egos, distractions, and traps that threaten to take her down with the doomed production, she discovers a truth far more sinister than she—or we—could have imagined.
