Description

I loved the whimsical coziness of this book and Emily’s “curmudgeonly ways”, as you put it, and the banter between her and Wendell was one of my favorite things ever.

I'm the author of books for adults and children, including Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Even the Darkest Stars, Ember and the Ice Dragons, The School Between Winter and Fairyland, and more. The story mainly features Emily and Wendell Bambleby, another professor from Cambridge who invites himself along on her expedition and who she is frustratedly annoyed at because she’s sure he’s trying to take credit for her work.

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love, in this heartwarming and enchanting fantasy.

I suppose most children fall in love with faeries at some point, but my fascination was never about magic or the granting of wishes. I didn’t realise until I finished this that it was the first in a series and there will be another book about Emily in the future – it ended in a really interesting place for her and Wendell so I will definitely be reading the next one to see what ends up developing. The character development was very good, I enjoyed learning about Emily and Wendell and seeing all sides of them.

There are also plenty of lore characters in the story, not all of whom are commonly seen in this genre. Whilst there wasn’t a massive amount of action in this book, Fawcett manages to perfectly blend the folklore and fae knowledge with the mystery surrounding, not only the Hidden folk of Hrafnsvik, but also that of Wendell Bambleby, who was a mystery all of his own. The ending feels like a plausible HFN (can't really go into detail without spoilers but you won't be unhappy). They're friends (while Emily is frequently irked by his presence, she still considers Wendell to be her only friend).
